That Time Jesus Added Me As a Friend on Facebook

Jesus Facebook“An intimate encounter with Jesus is the most transforming experience of human existence. To know him as he is, is to come home. To have his life, joy, love, and presence cannot be compared. A true knowledge of Jesus is our greatest need and our greatest happiness.” ~John Eldredge

As many of you know, I made it a New Year’s resolution this year to seek God with abandon and to get uncomfortable in my life in 2014 instead of worshiping comfort like so many of us do (and like I’ve been doing for years). In this quest, I’ve been reading every book I can find about Jesus in an effort to know him, to walk with him, and to draw near to his heart. The most recent one I read is Beautiful Outlaw by John Eldredge…and it completely rocked my world. It shines the light on various aspects of Jesus’s character that you might have never thought of before: His playfulness. His sense of humor. His radical devotion to truth. His beauty. His loving nature. His fierce intention.  And it made me fall in love with him about a million times more than I already am.

One of the things that John talks about in the book is how Jesus longs to communicate with us and to “be himself” with us by ministering to us and speaking to us on our level. He literally longs for our company, our friendship, our companionship. And toward the end of the book, John encourages you to ask God to show up and communicate with you in a way that you will understand. I think people tend to forget that Jesus shines just as brightly through a beautiful sunset, a newborn baby, or a song lyric that speaks to our hearts in a special way as he does through scripture or burning bushes or talking donkeys. He doesn’t have to manifest in front of us and sit down to dinner for it to be a powerful encounter. So I decided to follow John’s advice and said a simple prayer, asking God to show me a sign of his love in a way that I would understand. Then I closed the book and got ready for bed.

As I always do right before I fall asleep, I grabbed my phone to check Twitter and Facebook one more time, and as I scrolled through my Facebook friend requests, one caught my eye. The person’s profile picture was one of Jesus! I clicked on their profile to examine it more closely and that’s when I saw that on their cover photo, emblazoned in big lettering, was the phrase “Love of God.” (The full screenshot of the friend request appears at the top of this blog.) And all I could do was laugh. I laughed long and hard, and then I cried, and then I laughed again. Not five minutes before, I had asked God to reveal himself and his love for me in a way that I would understand, and he sends me this beautiful image of Jesus topped by the words “Love of God” in the form of a FB friend request! Now, obviously I know the friend request was not literally from God (LOL!) but the imagery that appeared on that person’s profile at that very moment through that very friend request was beyond coincidental. Particularly since social media is pretty much my “love language.” And the thing I have to wonder is…how many times before has God wanted to communicate his love for me in sweet, simple ways such as this…or even in big, GRAND ways…and I was too blind or busy or prideful to see?

It filled my heart with joy, and I went to sleep that night with a big smile on my face and the knowledge that I was loved. There’s no other feeling in the world like the feeling that you are LOVED, is there?

I urge you today, now, this moment…to ask God to reveal himself to you in a way that you will understand. Because he wants to. Badly. He wants to show up and be present and be let into your life. He wants to be your FRIEND.

Go ahead. He’s waiting. Accept his friend request.

Has God spoken to you in a funny, sweet, simple, or even GRAND way lately? Sound off in the comments below!

Another great book I highly recommend is Blessed Child by Bill Bright and Ted Dekker. It changed my life. It taught me how to walk in Gods kingdom and where I can find God and Jesus here on earth. It’s a wonderful story. If you read it I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I love Ted Dekker. I’m going to check out the other book too. Our pastor has actually been doing a series on who Jesus is, the different sides of him. Its been great.

I remember years ago, a former pastor preached on how much jesus loves each of us, and if we didn’t know that, we needed to ask him to show us. So I prayed for that, that He would show me how much He loved ME. That night I had the most surreal, out-of-body encounter with Jesus!! It was amazing and the feeling of LOVE that surrounded Him was unbelievable. By the next morning, I FINALLY knew how he felt about ME…little ME from hicktown Idaho! And that He is personal and feels just as strongly for each one of us! Ask Him, He WILL show you!!

This made me tear up. I’ve been needing Him to show me that He is with me in some way. I know He is, but I sure would like a sign letting me know I’m on the right track. Be blessed and be a blessing.

I absolutely loved this! God bless you Mandy Hale. Matthew 6:31 is also number one on my list of resolutions for 2014, to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and it seems like all the prayer conferences, sermons and devotions God has been leading me to this week have all been pointing to the theme of being connected to The Vine who is Jesus and to really have a deep connection with Him, a personal relationship. Keep writing Mandy Hale<3

    Hi Mandy!

I read your post last night & prayed that prayer. This morning I had to do some chores before I started to enjoy my Saturday. Calling my cable company was one of those chores…oh yes one of those companies that put you on hold forever with that awful elevator music then accidentally hang up on you so that you have to call back lol
So I had just gotten on hold when the music started playing…and do you know that the hold music wasn’t elevator music at all but contemporary Christian music?! I knew right then & there that God was indeed revealing Himself to me because a few minuets later my call was “accidentally” dropped & I had to call back & the hold music was the same ol’ elevator music. I thought you would appreciate this story!!

Reading this put a big smile on my face as it made me recall all those moments in my own life. Just the encouragement I needed today, so THANK YOU for sharing this – oh, and after I prayed the same prayer, I logged into pandora and the song playing “How sweet it is to be loved by you” Though a ‘secular’ song, this thoroughly and fully spoke to me immediately. You see, I am all about music 🙂 Many blessings to everyone

The words in this blog reminded me very much of a walk I took in the woods one day when I was trying to work out some things in my head about a bad marriage that I eventually ended. I was having a particularly bad day, and I just hit the woods, walking on a trail used for cross-country running. I walked fast and hard, almost like I was fleeing from something, and by the time I got to where the path was “wilder”, I was exhausted and surrendered. Returning from that walk, I sat down and the following poem poured from my heart. I still am not sure that I always know how to choose a way that doesn’t leave one scarred and damaged, but I do know we must always remember that we do not walk alone. I hope this poem brings hope to any who need it as you are working your way through a tangled path… know that there is an easier way out there for you if you look for the signs. I hope this post is not too long for the comments box.

    Wild Abandon

I walked today with wild abandon.

Or as much abandon as one can find
Through woods on man-made paths all lined
With cinders that crunch under one’s feet,
Each step a reminder of the weight
    We are upon this world.

I walked today with wild abandon.

Found abandon where the cinders end,
Soft mud and leaves are in each bend
Of the path that crawls among the trees.
Through tangled vines I finally see
    The path forks into two.

I walked today with wild abandon.

    Impulsively I chose a path,
The wilder one that cut a swath.
Ferns and phlox and firs that swayed
Brought a smile at the choice I’d made.
New life was all around me.

I walked today with wild abandon.

The path led down at a fast pace
And looking ahead a little space,
I saw a mass of trees had fallen,
Their trunks criss-crossed and all in
    The place I needed footing.

I walked today with wild abandon.

Six strong oaks lay on the ground.
In tangled branches I was bound
And had to fight to gain a step.
I began to wonder if I had kept
    Moving in the wrong direction.

I walked today with wild abandon.

I bent and folded my body and mind.
Never once did I look behind
But forged on through that tangled mass
Until I stood up high at last
    Upon a fallen trunk.

I walked today with wild abandon.

Another path I spied in the trees,
One that was cleared for walker’s ease.
Why do we always choose the way
    That makes us struggle day-to-day
And leaves us scarred and bruised?

I walked today with wild abandon.

Along rough bark I stepped unsure,
But found the roughness made secure
My feet, and I stood up there and prayed:
“Lord, show me the better way.”
And I climbed down from the log.

I walked today with wild abandon.

Through violets, ferns and soft moist moss,
I sought to find the path I’d lost.
No cinders were beneath my feet,
But the walking was more than sweet
Because the Lord marked the way.

I walked today with wild abandon.

A shaft of sunlight through the canopy,
Filtered green and gold, a sight to see,
Shone down upon a narrow way
Where wild abandon held no sway,
And I did not walk alone.

I walked today with wild abandon.

I felt a soft touch brush my hand.
I thought perhaps a green fern frond
Or moth as soft as silken breeze
Caressed me there among the trees,
    But nothing was beside me.

I walked today with wild abandon.

I stepped upon the narrow way
Where dogwood trees reach for the sky,
    White blossoms telling stories true
Of sacrifice for me and you,
And I knew who walked beside me.

I walked today with wild abandon.

In wild abandon, I reached beside me
    For a nail-scarred hand I couldn’t see,
Felt His touch guide my wayward feet
Among white trees that blossomed sweet,
    Reminders of His love.

I walk with Him who will never abandon.

    Hi mandy,
“I urge you today, now, this moment…to ask God to reveal himself to you in a way that you will understand.” …
Then I looked up and to the right on my computer screen – saw the pink “Follow Me” with the bird icon. Made me laugh too and smile!! Pretty much what God wants us to do I think… Thanks for your inspiring words and helping to shed light on God’s beautiful love for us all. Blessings and Peace!

HAHA this made me share a good laugh with my maker. I LOVED Beautiful Outlaw and I particularly loved how it portrays Jesus as such a “comfortable pair of jeans” kind of guy who you can see yourself sharing embarrassing stories at sleepovers with, but who also challenges you and compels you toward such deep good. Anyhoo, thanks for the laugh! PS i LOVE this blog!

That’s awesome Mandy! I actually had an experience where Jehovah showed me love. It was dark and sprinkling a little, and I was feeling very down. I was wondering if anyone out there actually loved me for who I am. Then this guy just came out of nowhere, jogged up to me, and talked to me. He asked if he could say a prayer for me in whatever I was going through in life. I told him, and we prayed. He said I had a gentle heart and I was a good person. That made me feel tons better! 😀

Mandy, first I have to say that I absolutely LOVED your book, and your tweets and blogposts always seem to strike a chord with me. So, thank you!! After reading this post a few days ago, I took your challenge, and I’ve been praying that God would show me in some small way His love for me. Today was a pretty mediocre day, I wasn’t feeling the greatest, and I’ve been on edge. On my way home from working out, I stopped to get gas and thought I’d grab a cup of coffee to keep me warm on the drive home. The cashier in the gas station is a sweet, friendly gentleman that I’ve talked to before when I’ve stopped. After chatting with him for a minute, I got my money out and told him I just needed the coffee. He told me not to worry about it, it was covered. It struck me that this was such a nice thing for him to do, I thanked him, wished him well, and left. It wasn’t until I was pulling out of the parking lot that the thought crossed my mind that God had just bought me a cup of coffee. I felt warm from the inside out all the way home (not just because of the coffee) and I’ve been tearing up about it all evening. 🙂

After reading this blog, I began to pray that God would reveal Himself to me in a way that I would understand. I wanted Him to speak to me. And then Saturday night, He did. Saturday was my college’s Snow Ball and I was going with a group of friends. Everyone else in the group had a date so I felt alone and in all honesty a little bit upset. While we were eating at the dance, I started to feel really down. I was all dressed up and longing to have someone tell me how beautiful they thought I looked. And then I started wishing my ex-boyfriend (who left me back in September for another girl) was there. I felt upset and I know I looked that way too. My friends kept asking if I was okay, but I just shook my head and told them I was fine. And then God chose to reveal Himself to me. The lady that was waiting on our table, came over to me and said, “Smile, honey, Jesus Loves You.” I replied with “I know He does.” And then it hit me, Jesus loves me. In that moment, I didn’t need a guy there telling me that I looked beautiful. I didn’t need to have someone there to tell me that they loved me. Because God loves me and really that’s all that matters. After it all sunk in, I wanted to find the lady who waited on my table to thank her and tell her how much what she said meant to me. But I never got the chance. I am just so thankful that God chose to use her that night to remind me of His great love for me.

Mandy, that was beautiful! I just prayed to God the same request you mentioned; I want him to show up where I can understand and in a simple way! Thank you for being an inspiration and leading women not only to a joyful singleness, but to a childlike/authentic relationship to Jesus!
