The Single Woman’s Dash of Sass: 30 Days of Happiness

Quote of the Day:

“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.” ~Elizabeth Gilbert

The Single Woman Says:

Last night a friend brought Oprah’s “30 Days of Happiness” campaign to my attention – and I was immediately captivated. How many of us take the time every single day to stop and think about what our happiest moment of the day was? It seems so many of us fall into bed at the end of the day in sheer exhaustion, or lie away and obsess over the bad or embarrassing or stressful parts of our day – but how might our lives change for the better if we focused on the happy and the glad instead of the negative and the sad?

Which brings me to Oprah’s #30DaysOfHappiness Campaign.

Basically, from today through the next 30 days (which 30 days from now will be August 22nd), the goal is take a moment each day to reflect on the happiest moment of your day, then blog or tweet or journal (or all three!) about it. When I paused for a moment last night to consider the happiest moment of my day, I immediately pinpointed a conversation that I had with my 5-year-old niece Olivia. Livi was telling me about one of her little friends at school who gets picked on a lot by the other kids for being different. But Livi doesn’t see her differences…she only sees the face of a friend. “I take care of her,” Livi said. “She’s my best friend.” Tears came to my eyes as I realized the depth of my niece’s innocent and great big beautiful heart….and it automatically made me feel like I had an infusion of pure sunshine sent straight through my soul! And that was just Day 1! So imagine what 30 days of happiness can do to transform our lives from the inside out?!? The possibilities are ENDLESS!

So my challenge to you is this: Join me in the #30DaysOfHappiness Campaign. Every day I will be tweeting about my happiest moment of the day…and some days, hopefully even posting video blogs. At the end of the 30 days, let’s see how much more magical our lives have become as a result of gazing upon the glass of our lives as half full rather than half empty. Happiness is sought after, prayed for, fought for…but all too often, overlooked, because we forgot to look in our own backyards. How bout we change that? And in the process of changing our mindsets and our attitudes…we might just change our lives.
